88 players have, so far, started
a game in goal for Everton, including 2 outfield players (see the notes
below)!
In addition, 1 goalkeeper - John Ruddy in February 2006 - made his only
Everton appearance as an
early substitute in a Goodison Park League game against Blackburn after
Iain Turner had been sent off.
Several outfield players have also unexpectedly had to step in between
the sticks midway through games,
following injuries, sendings-off and so on to the starting goalkeeper.
11 goalkeepers made just 1 appearance for the club - William Thomas, William
Sutton, John Patrick, John Palmer, Robert Depledge, William
Bromilow, Mike Stowell, Espen Baardsen, John Ruddy, Carlo Nash and
Mark Travers.
John Patrick must have felt particularly aggrieved to keep a clean sheet
in a November 1896 6-0 League win
against Burnley - and then never to be selected again!
Oh, and just 1 Everton 'keeper has scored a goal for the club!
Tim Howard succeeded with a huge clearance against Bolton at Goodison
in a January 2012 League game!
Gathered together here - and via the links above - are just about every
statty thing you'd ever need to
know about Everton goalkeepers! Have fun!

* Jack Crelley was a left-back who played the first 12 minutes
in goal in a 0-0 League draw at home to Man City in December 1904.
Normal 'keeper Leigh 'Dick' Roose had failed to arrive
due to fog and his last minute replacement, Billy Scott, arrived late!
In October 1905 Crelley also took over in goal at half-time
after Scott withdrew injured in a League match at Sheff Utd.
Hope Robertson
played in a number of outfield positions for Everton in the 1890s
- on the wing, centre-forward and half-back.
In October 1892 - with Everton suffering a goalkeeping
injury crisis - he played the full match in goal in a 4-3 League win
at
Newton Heath (later to be renamed Man Utd).
A year earlier, in October 1891, Robertson had also taken
over in goal halfway through the 1st half in a League match at Bolton
after 'keeper David Jardine had been injured. |
