World War II
Total Appearances and Goals

(Click for Individual WWII Seasons:    1939/40     1940/41     1941/42     1942/43     1943/44     1944/45     1945/46)

The 1939/40 Football League was abandoned after 3 games when World War II broke out.
After that - up to and including the 1945/46 season - it was replaced with regional leagues.
The normal FA Cup competition was suspended (it returned during the 1945/46 season).
Teams competed in the Football League War Cup instead.
From 1941/42 to 1944/45 inclusive, games played in the War Cup also counted as War League games.
Games played and goals scored in these 'dual matches' have only been included once in the players' overall totals.
The appearance and goal statistics below are not counted in any official records.

† Teams were allowed to use guest players in wartime matches.
The actual clubs that Everton's guest players belonged to is indicated where appropriate.

Players in bold only played wartime games for Everton; they never played in a normal Football League
or FA Cup match for the club.

Huge thanks to the incomparable David France for providing many of the lesser-known players' first names!

*     Jones scored an extra-time goal in a League Championship/League War Cup 'dual' match at Preston in April 1942.
The score after 90 minutes was counted as the result of the League match, so the extra-time goal is included in these statistics
as only a War Cup goal.

**   Wyles scored an extra-time goal in a War Football League/Lancashire Senior Cup 'dual' match at Chester in March 1945.
The score after 90 minutes was counted as the result of the League match, so the extra-time goal isn't included in these statistics.

***  McIntosh played for the club as a guest during the war and later signed permanently in March 1949.

**** Rawlings played 32 War Football League matches for Everton as a guest, scoring 13 goals, before signing permanently for Everton in
November 1945, after which he played 13 further War Football League games for the club, scoring twice more.
