Everton's first match in the 2008-09 UEFA Cup was in the 1st Round - a 2-legged knock-out tie - against Standard Liege of Belgium, with the matches taking place on September 18 and October 2.

We lost 4-3 on aggregate and so missed out on the 5-team group stage - 2 matches at home and 2 away - which comprised 8 groups, with the top 3 teams in each group qualifying for the 1st Knock-Out Round, where they were joined by the 8 teams that finished in 3rd place in each UEFA Champions League Group, making a total of 32 teams.

The knock-out format (using the traditional aggregate score from home and away matches) continued onto the final, played in Turkey at Fenerbahce's Sukru Saracoglu Stadium on 20th May 2009 and won by Shakhtar Donetsk.
